As we move into summer the growth of your lawn may start to slow down. Only mow when necessary, never taking more than one third of the length of the plant off at a time. Increasing the cutting height slightly is also recommended during the drier summer months, which should allow deeper roots to grow and reduce evaporation from the surface. Don't forget to make arrangements for your lawn to be mown whilst you are on holiday.
It should not be necessary to feed your lawn during summer. Do not apply fertiliser during periods of drought as this may scorch your lawn.
During periods of drought your lawn may turn brown and straw coloured, however a well maintained lawn will invariably recover once the rains return. Good maintenance at other times of the year, aeration and appropriate feeding will help rooting and the lawn's ability to withstand and recover from periods of drought.
If you can water it's best to do so at the first signs of drought, when the grass is still green but there is little growth and a dulling of the normal bright green colouration. Water evenly, in the early morning or the evening, when the water is more likely to soak in.
Weeds and coarse grasses are best removed by hand or spot treated using a suitable selective herbicide.
